There’s an idea that a financial planner or a wealth manager is a mutual fund, or stock picker and all you do is investments.  I don’t believe that.  Investments are a by-product of a financial plan, but never the core of a plan.  If you revolve your plan around investments you will lose the client.

Every word you say should translate into value and understanding for your client.  “OH! That’s why I should be doing this!”  After taking this class you will be able to walk into a room, present your best self and close a client, and be extremely confident and happy with the results you’ve produced for your client.

The more connected you are to your client’s business the easier it will be to understand your client’s needs.  Don’t try to impress your potential client with what you ASSUME their business and personal needs are.  Shut up and listen.  If you are so impressed with your own voice, you’ll soon be alone speaking to yourself because you just lost that client.

Let your client teach you about their needs and wants, and then turn that into reality for them.

I made a decision early in my career that I wasn’t going to be the average advisor and live an average life.  Being able to understand my client’s needs and wants, and present to them a solution to achieve that in words and a format they can understand has propelled my career in ways I could never imagine.  It is very rewarding when you see how much more your clients have been able to achieve with your guidance.  Once you know a few basic principles, you can build your whole financial planning structure around it.

We are teachers.  Find a way to make yourself special, connect with your clients on a deeper level, and guide them towards a life they have only imagined.  You must be empathetic.  You must see through your client’s eyes.  You must simply say that one of the things that makes life worth living is helping people achieve their financial dreams.

Allow them to live in their future lives, and motivate them through the mundane of the day-to-day as they work to achieve a much larger goal, leaving the meeting with you energized and excited about the days to come.  It’s about changing how they perceive the financial world.
